Michel Huet est né en 1917.
Après une formation de photographe à l’Ecole Vaugirard, il est entré dans les troupes coloniales à la fin de la guerre en 1945, et c’est à ce titre qu’il effectue son premier reportage en Afrique, sur le retour des tirailleurs sénégalais à Dakar : c’est le coup de cœur…. Et il décide alors qu’il y reviendra.
De retour à Paris en 1947, après cinq mois de reportage au Vietnam et au Cambodge au service de la documentation outre-mer, il crée l’agence photographique Hoa-Qui et commence sa grande aventure africaine. Sa première expédition de six mois se fait en auto-stop à travers ce qui était alors l’A.O.F. et l’A.E.F.
Il en rapporte une moisson d’images fortes, vraies, émouvantes, qui constitueront le début d’un fonds sur l’Afrique augmenté au fur et à mesure de ses nouvelles expéditions.

Il publie en 1953 trois livres : Noir d’ivoire, Afrique africaine et Les hommes de la danse.

Les voyages se succèdent alors : Afrique, Antilles, Océan indien, qui permettront à Michel Huet de constituer un fonds exceptionnel comprenant quelque deux cent mille diapositives.

Son ouvrage publié en 1978, Danses d’Afrique aux éditions du Chêne est toujours disponible.

Michel Huet was born in 1917.

After training as a photographer at the Ecole Vaugirard, he joined the colonial troops at the end of the war in 1945, and it was in this capacity that he carried out his first reportage in Africa, on the return of the Senegalese infantrymen to Dakar: it was love at first sight.... And he decided that he would return.

Back in Paris in 1947, after five months reporting from Vietnam and Cambodia in the Overseas Documentation Department, he set up the Hoa-Qui photographic agency and began his great African adventure. His first six-month expedition was hitch-hiking through what was then French West Africa and French Equatorial Africa.

He brought back a wealth of powerful, true, and moving images, which were to form the basis of a collection on Africa that would grow with each of his new expeditions. In 1953, he published three books: Noir d'ivoire, Afrique africaine and Les hommes de la danse.

His travels then followed one another: Africa, the West Indies and the Indian Ocean, enabling Michel Huet to build up an exceptional collection of some two hundred thousand slides.

His book Danses d'Afrique, published in 1978 by Editions du Chêne, is still available.

Michel Huet died in 1996.
